One artist who visited South Georgia was Edward Seago. Travelling in style on the Royal Yacht Britannia, with Prince Philip on a round the world cruise, Seago painted Grytviken whilst it was still in operation:
I have a copy of Ron Ranson's second book about Seago which covers his Antarctic journey. They are beautiful paintings. I haven't seen any watercolours unfortunately, but I expect he found oils easier in the low temperatures.
